ROBSON BECOMING A NEW PLAZA

Apr 29, 2016

Hey, 11,000 people can’t be wrong. That’s how many people told us through our Re-Imagine Downtown visioning process that they really, really wanted a central gathering plaza or plaza in downtown.

So, after much input from the DVBIA and its members, construction on the north plaza of the Vancouver Art Gallery will begin in July after the Vancouver International JazzFest wraps up. Construction will extend into Spring 2017.

At the same time, the 800 block of Robson Street, which had been closing for Summers since 2010, will close permanently as well in July. After consultation through Re-Imagine and with neighbouring property owners, the Downtown Bus Review, and TransLink’s support of the re-routing of the No. 5 bus via Pender Street, the DVBIA is supporting the permanent closure with conditions.

Conditions include involvement in the development of a formal stewardship strategy to manage both the north plaza and 800 block, programming of the space, re-design of the space and surrounding blocks and a traffic flow plan to better manage vehicle traffic in the area.

This new central public space is the realization of architect Arthur Erikson’s dream of Block 51. Read more.
