There will be a ceremony for a statue given to Vancouver by the home of the original Games, Olympia, Greece. The statue was given in honour of being a host city for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

It is a representation of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, and is 3.8 metres tall. But it also weighs about 900 kilograms, so it had to be very carefully lifted by a crane truck onto nine bolts anchored in a $100,000, 2.5-metre concrete foundation in the boulevard of Cordova Street near Thurlow.

The ceremony for the Nike Statue will be on Saturday April 26. There will be a temporary vehicular traffic closure between 10:30-2:30pm in the following sections.

  • West Cordova between Thurlow and Burrard
  • Thurlow between West Hastings and Canada Place.
