We did it!
Check out the new Awesome public lane behind the Birks building that has a new ‘Play’ theme. It’s a BYOB space – meaning bring your own balls – basketball or soccer to play with.
This idea of Awesome takes existing, underutilized downtown laneways and reshapes them into engaging public spaces accessible by everyone.
The Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association, HCMA Architecture & Design and the City of Vancouver are creating a new, robust network of interconnected laneways, each with its own sense of place and evolving identity – starting with the Hastings West lane.
The lane opened in September as part of the Placemaking Week conference. Thousands showed up. Watch the party video.
The transformation is almost complete with more lighting to be added. Watch the transformation video.
So, what difference has it made to how people use the lane? Watch the simultaneous before and after time lapse footage. Our counts tell us more than 3x as many pedestrians are now using the laneway. The majority are taking photos of themselves against the coloured walls. Who knew?
Where’d this idea come from?
Last year, 11,000 Vancouverites weighed in on the Downtown Vancouver BIA’s Re-Imagine process. They helped create a vision for downtown for the next 25 years. Refresh your memory.
One of the ideas that come up again and again – activate, decorate, commercialize, clean up/brighten up our laneways please! So, we are.
