Vancouver knows how to do Spring! With the plum blossoms already out, downtown gets ready to usher in the flowering cherry tree. Cherry blossoms, here we come! This March and April, join a favorite springtime tradition, admiring and celebrating the cherry blossoms. The Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival and the DVBIA mark ten years of bringing the downtown community together under the cherry tree with arts and culture.
Kicking off the Festival is the free lunchtime concert, Cherry Jam Downtown inside Burrard SkyTrain Station on Thursday March 24th. Cherry Jam presents an eclectic line-up of local talent including Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra quartet with Pro Arte Centre dancers, BC Children’s Children’s Choir, Vancouver Okinawa Taiko, Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble and Haiku Mime with mime artist Yayoi Hirano and Holly Burke of The Naturals on flute.
In partnership with Transit Museum Society, the Festival is delighted to introduce TRAMS Blossom Bus tours from Burrard SkyTrain Station to explore some of the city’s best blossoms. As tours are bloom dependent, be sure to check out the Festival website at vcbf.ca for the schedule.
The Festival is celebrating their tenth anniversary in a big way this spring with Blossom Barge, a floating installation of 36 cherry trees in bloom unlike anything ever seen on Vancouver blue ways before! Come out to see the barge with its canopy of pink and white cherry blossoms as it sails past downtown, Coal Harbour and False Creek. On April 16th and April 17th, the best downtown viewing spots for the whole family to cheer on the cherries are: the Pier at Canada Place, Jack Poole Plaza, Harbour Green Park and Stanley Park. Later, Science World and Sails of Lights, Port Metro Vancouver, will light up with cherry blossoms and turn pink in celebration with the Festival! Blossom Barge sails again to return to Crab Park around 3pm on Sunday April 17th when it will be joined by a flotilla in False Creek.
Other returning Festival events include free Tree Talks & Walks, with the first tour leaving from the Hyatt Regency Vancouver and concluding at Burrard SkyTrain Station in time for the Cherry Jam concert on March 24th. To enjoy a uniquely Vancouver experience this spring visit vcbf.ca for a full list of events. You can even purchase your very own cherry tree, Birthday Blossoms to be planted on private property and support the Festival’s 10th birthday!
