Placemaking is a term that began to be used in the 1970s by architects and planners to describe the process of creating squares, plazas, parks, streets and waterfronts that will attract people because they are pleasurable or interesting. Landscape often plays an important role in the design process.

The DVBIA is a big supporter of events and festivals that bring residents, families and visitors together downtown to take part in themed festivals, one-off or ongoing events

VIVA Vancouver is a summer program in partnership with the City of Vancouver that transforms Granville Street into pedestrian public space with festivals, events, and activations for all to enjoy.
