Enterprising Beginnings
Located at the southwest corner of Seymour and West Georgia streets.
Here lies a historic tribute to the great Canadian department store of today that began as a trading post for new settlers. Established in 1670, the Hudson’s Bay Company played an integral role in Vancouver’s development. In this tile, mosaic artist Liz Calvin chose to reflect the company’s iconic colours of red, yellow and indigo – colours that grace the famous “Hudson’s Bay wool blanket” owned by many a Canadian. In the foreground of this work, a lunch cart awaits hungry workers in a setting from the early twentieth century. This timeless scene is juxtaposed with decorative detail taken from the Corinthian columns gracing the company’s downtown building.
