Sea of Opportunity
Located at the northwest corner of Burrard and Dunsmuir streets.
As one of Vancouver’s founding industries, fishing and its icons are aptly depicted in this mosaic created by Bruce Walther. Drawing from the design of Vancouver’s Coat of Arms from 1903, the fisherman stands next to his catch of the day – which is a stylized tribute to Bert Binning’s BC Beginnings – a mosaic mural located in the Commerce Bank at Dunsmuir & Granville streets. Look closely at the far left of this mosaic, and you’ll see a stylized representation of water rippling and swirling. This draws from a mosaic designed in 1966 which resides on the bottom of the BC Centennial Fountain pool, located on the West Georgia side of the Vancouver Art Gallery.
