Art-i-tecture
Located outside the entrance to Cathedral Place, 900 block of West Georgia Street.
Vancouver is resplendent with architecture that incorporates art and symbolic design. In this tile, Bruce Walther has melded a collage of images drawn from some of Vancouver’s most notable architectural features. The figure at the centre of this mosaic is a sculpture of a nurse created in terra cotta in 1929 for the Georgia Medical Dental Building. Modern replicas of her now reside at Cathedral Place. The background is inspired by stained glass work in the lobby of the Art Deco Marine Building. And you may recognize the green and blue mosaic on the left of this tile as Bert Binning’s mosaic pattern that covered BC Hydro’s former building on Burrard Street. On the right, is a tribute to a mosaic mural designed by renowned artist Lionel Thomas. That piece graced the previous Central Public Library at Burrard and Robson streets for many years.
